Dropbox: 10 things you didn't know you could do

1. Favorite files for offline reading

If you bookmark your images or text documents on your mobile device using the Dropbox app, you can access them later, even if you're not connected to the network.

2. Use Dropbox as your default documents folder

To preserve memory and time, you can save files directly to Dropbox from your programs on your computer. This functionality requires entering small commands in Terminal on the Mac OS or a small change in Windows settings.

For Mac OS, open Terminal (in Utilities) and type cd Dropbox. Press Enter, and then type -s~/Documents/Documents. Press Enter again to complete the process.

In Windows, right-click the “My Documents” folder, select “Properties” and click “Move”. Then select the Dropbox folder.

3. Email files to Dropbox as attachments

If you don't have access to Dropbox, it may be useful to have an alternative way to send files.

If you create an account at sendtodropbox.com, you can send files to a custom email address as attachments. The files will automatically appear in the “Attachments” folder in Dropbox.

4. Get More Space – Free

If you have a free Dropbox account, you will immediately have access to 2GB of space, but you can access more space without having to pay for it.

Dropbox offers 500MB for every friend you recommend and activate the service, 250MB for completing a “Getting Started” list, 125 for connecting to redes sociais and several other options to gain more space.

Dropbox Pro users can get up to 32GB of extra space, thanks to the aforementioned.

5. Keep your Firefox settings on multiple computers

It is difficult to maintain specific preferences or add-ons in Firefox when using the browser on multiple computers. However, you can download Firefox Portable and store it in Dropbox. Since Firefox Portable can be used anywhere, your settings and add-ons will be synchronized.

6. Upload Files to Dropbox via URL

Droplet URL allows you to send links directly to your Dropbox folders. All you need is a link (and this works perfectly with a PDF or similar) and paste it into the Droplet URL form.

7. Download Torrents Remotely

Note: Do not use this tip for illegal downloads

If you are away from your personal computer and want to download files so they are ready when you get home, Dropbox is the ideal tool.

You just need to adjust the settings in your Torrents program (uTorrent, BitTorrent, etc.) to automatically upload your torrent to Dropbox.

8. Maintain two Dropbox accounts (Advanced)

This one can get complicated, so it is aimed more at advanced users (using Mac OS).

Many people use Dropbox for both professional and personal purposes, often using separate accounts for each purpose, as Dropbox does not support multiple users at the same time. This can be inconvenient when you are logged into one account but want to access files on another.

The solution is to use an alternative home folder in the command line and create another Dropbox icon and folder, saved in separate areas of your computer. You can differentiate the two by placing them in different colors.

9. Backup your Website

You can easily back up your website and its data to Dropbox, which is useful when you've put a lot of time and effort into creating your website but are worried about your servers.

With a service like BackupBox or one WordPress plugin, you can rest assured that your website will be saved.

10. Host your Page

Do you want to have a website, but don't want to pay for a domain? Do you want to have an online portfolio, but don't know anything about HTML? Dropbox can help.

When using services such as DropPages or the Pancake.io, you can create a small, simple website with minimal effort.

As Pancake.io, all you need to do is save text files in Dropbox and you can edit them in the same way at any time. O DropPages is a little more complex, allowing you to add custom themes and addresses. Both services allow you to use Markdown or HTML.

We live in a time where we want (and sometimes need) to access information at all times. This includes our own data and files – text documents, photos, videos, music and more. This is why services like Dropbox and the cloud are so popular with the online generation.

Free (with the option of a paid upgrade), Dropbox allows you to send your files to folders accessible wherever there is an internet connection. It eliminates all the hassle of sending email attachments to yourself and space limits. Dropbox can be used on the desktop application, on your smartphone, on your tablet and through your browser.
