Twitter has added a way to flag links within tweets as “potentially sensitive.” The company announced Thursday that there is a new API field that will appear whenever a tweet contains a link, giving users the option to be warned before clicking on links that shouldn’t be opened at work or that aren’t appropriate for sensitive people.
This new feature is not yet available, but Twitter has announced that it has been added and is currently in the testing phase. According to representatives from the social network, the aim is not to censor content. However, according to Twitter's Media Policy, the company "will remove content that may be considered sensitive, such as nudity, violence, or medical procedures." For those who are curious about how this feature will be used, we recommend reading this document.
To us, it seems like the realization of a long overdue feature, giving users or their children the ability to control the type of content they are exposed to, allowing them to use Twitter without the fear of being caught clicking on a less than appropriate link.
